European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
