Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of conservative commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of files that contained no new information.
